GM #36:A Holtzian Valentine!

Lets face it: One of the best reasons to Love Tim Holtz is because he doesn't do "cute!" Good, strong, suitable for a guy images....great for guy birthdays and guy valentine's day cards. And this week's Grungy Monday Challenge with Linda at Studio L3 is to use any Tim product or technique and have at it...for Valentines Day! And as an added bonus, this week the challenge is sponsored by Simon Says Stamp, with a chance to win a gift certificate to that wonderful store!!

So, while the construction happened at the last minute (really! with a great dinner starting in the oven for my Honey-planned just to allow stamping time while cooking; time management at it's best!) the mental planning had been going on since Monday morning. I started with Tim's hearts dies and grungepaper. (again; perfect for a guy; not too frilly) I painted them with the Picket Fence Stain, then ran them through his swirl texture fade, with his technique of putting Fired Brick ink on the fade so the red would imbed into the impression...came out totally cool!! The label (again, his alteration line) was cut, and stamped with the saying. Then the problems kinda crept in: assembly...it was missing something; so I cut a layer from his Seasonal paper stack, but it was too dark, so I hit it with the Picket Fence Distress Stain; a few times... Still needed something, so I cut out the Be Mine from the same stack, then edged the top heart with Black Soot DI to try to give it some contrast, which didn't really work, hit it with some more Stain, and once dry, did look pretty good.
Now, as the picture just loaded; it does look like one hot mess; but take my word, in person, it was much better! LOL! But now the baked potatoes were done, ready for stuffing and twice baking; and along with the grilled rib-eye steaks, ceasar salad, sherried mushrooms and green beans, my Honey seemed very happy with it all! And on a week night, on Valentine's day, he had better not said otherwise! Oh, and I haven't confirmed it yet, but he sorta indicated that my Valentine's gift was sorta on pre-order....Distress Markers maybe??? I'll keep you all posted! So have a great weekend everyone! Grungy-Spooky Monday #22

Wow..almost missed the first Grungy Monday Challenge over at Linda's Studio L3, which has been on a break, since it seems like forever! Our mission: A Halloween inspired project using one or more of Tim Holtz's products. While I don't have a dearth of Tim's wonderful products, I do have a dearth of halloween-type items. Don't know why: I love Halloween, I love costumes, ditto candy; I have just never "crafted" anything halloween, not even web cupcakes!! So, I have spent the whole week wondering what to do. Then Tim's blog gave me some inspiration- I have a stash of the Seasonal Grungeboard diecuts-under lock and key!! I thought I had the craft resist paper, but apparently not.

So..using one of the rare bats, I black dabbered it, then spritzed with the home-made blend of perfect-pearls mist. While that was drying, I colored a tag using the wrinkle free distress technique and Tim's new seasonal colors. I then Embossed the tag with Tim's old tree folder, and hit that with the Bundled twigs. I then realized I should have done the moon first...sigh. So , I cut out the moon from the Memory Box cat w/moon stamp, hit that with DI Mustard Seed, and the gold Perfect Pearl mist. I cut out a bit of letterblocks from the Seasonal Stash, stuck the bat over the cat-head in the moon, then just had to add the googly-eyed scaredy cat sticker on the bottom. And yay! Play Date in the Cafe #101

Wow, I haven't made it to a play date in, like forever! But this week's colors, Wine, Smudge, Leather and Parchment, are my favorite colors, so I had to give it a go. I will admit, not my best representation...in my head it came out so much better! LOL! Time just didn't allow me to bend the reality to fit. And I have to go watch that Tim Holtz video to see about the reflections stamps....I seemed to have missed a step, as you can't see that on the dress form at all. But I did get to play with the new stamp set, and I'm Soooo Loving that Ruler!

My inks were Vintage Photo, Aged Mahogany, Weathered Wood and Antique Linen. I was sorta amazed how bright the AgeMahogany came out on the binding ribbon...I even added some of the weathered wood to tame it down, but you can't tell. Now, watch, when I want that rich red, it just won't happen! LOL!

GM #11-the Batik strikes Back

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone's week went well. I'm not much of a summer/heat person, but I have to say, if we don't get out of this wet, dreary weather soon, I will not be held accountable for my behaviour! LOL! I'm so "blah", even with 3 (yes..3!) crafting opportunites this week, I just couldn't come up with anything I liked. Oh, and what are we coming up with? Linda in Studio L3 has assigned us another Tim Holz Technique Challenge from January, 2008--which you can see here. This is the Batik style, which does require the use of......The IRON! /gasp!! But I can't blame my overall ambivalence towards the iron, 'cause in the past I've always been pleased with the effect, just not this week. Maybe the ATC format just doesn't allow it to show through?

Anyway, Here is my 2nd attempt: Istamped a Penny Black Morning glory in Tumbled glass DI, then embossed. Overcolored with Tattered Rose, Peeled Paint and Faded Denim. After the ironing, I stamped the TH birds in Chipped Sapphire. The TH Butterfly was stamped in Walnut Stain DI, then dusted with gold Perfect Pearls. The Believe stamp is one of the first 15 stamps I've owned, but I can't tell you where its from at the moment! Im not sure if this will make it into the GM Tray; we'll just have to wait and see.

And just because, here is my first attempt: The TH Papillon Background was clear embossed with Milled Lavender DI. The card was then wrinkle free distressed with Concord Grape and Victorian Velvet (a much smoother look than sponging on, after ironing, I loved the polished look! Should have stopped there! LOL) Then I added the butterflies in black--to much, then tried adding the other butterfly, black with gold perfect pearls... maybe if I didn't use the black?? Eh, something...../sigh.

PDC #85

Greetings everyone! I feel like if the wet weather here in the north east doesn't end soon, I'll become a mushroom!! Pretty much have kissed my garden goodbye; or put another way, it will be au naturel; may the strongest plants win! Unfortunately, with blueberry being a color of choice this week, it drives home that my 10 acres of wild blueberries... not a flower among them! I'm usually picking in 3 weeks, and my freezer is empty...so sad. But it does allow for craft time.

So, over at the Play Date Cafe, the challenge is for Blueberry (cry), Cream and Dusty Rose. I started with a dark blue card, layerd with a cream panel that I ran through a swiss dot embossing folder. I then hit the dots with some Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink. The TH Tattered Florals die was used with a dusty rose paper. Some of the flowers were hit with the DI Sapphire ink, with a new lace pattern and music pattern stamp from Glitz Studio. The other two were hit with an Inkadinkado Flourish in Victorian Velvet Distress Ink. Hard to see in the photo, but the brads are a sparkly dark blue. The saying is from Impression Obsession (yes, I wrote everything down this week AND remembered to bring it to work!) The panel is from the new Spellbinders Die I picked up this weekend. I don't have the impression pad or silicone pad for my Big Shot, so I improvised with folded paper...pretty bizarre, but it worked. I tried working in some beautiful blue velvet ribbon, but it just looked too busy.

Grungy Monday #10 & Just For Fun & SSS Tag: Get Inky with It (Distress Inks, that is!)

Good Friday Morning! It has cooled down a bit, and I was able to get in my craft room for a real quick go at three challenges! My main motivator-theGrungy Monday challenge from Linda at Studio L3. As part of our exploration of Tim Holtz's wonderful techniques and products, this week we are to play with Distress Inks to our hearts content. Well, Duh! They never leave my desk! And a new challenge for me, Just For Fun which is Something Tim! And lastly, Simon Says Stamp and show a Tag! While I feel a bit guilty on the triple duty, we do what we have to do! LOL!

So, Here it is; A tag that has been wrinkle free distressed with Ancient Linen and Victorian Velvet DI's. The edges where hit with Barn Door. The stamp is, of course, from Tim, as are the Die's, the new mini hearts and mini flourish (Straight from my new shipment from Ecletic Paperie! Thanks Daisy!)! The Flourishes (grunge paper) were inked with Victorian Velvet and the heart (grunge board) were inked with Barn Door. The heart was then stamped with the large background from Tim's Papillion set, then all were sprayed with gold Perfect pearls in a mini-mister. (Yup, just rifle through the Compendium; it's all there! LOL). I then ran the seam binding through some barn door DI, and also spritzed with the PP mix; disappointing that you can't see the gold. And--Ta Dah..done! (Ok, actually took over an hour; puppy issues, had to play with the new dies and fades to get an idea, etc.)

PDC #82--Challenge 4: Birds 1

Wow...I feel like I haven't been able to have a play date in months! Luckily, not only did I have time this week, I also so loved the colors! My muse was all but doing the happy dance! Ideas were jumping out at me since Thursday. Ahh, but the actual assembliage...now that was a bit tricky!

Since the goldfinch are back on the hill, I went with the yellow bird idea. The bird and cage are from Tim Holt'z Caged Bird die. Bird 1: tried embossing with a music texture plate. Image too big for little bird...didn't make any sense. Bird 2: Used the retro circles texture fade from Tim Holtz. Embossed too deeply, bird decapitated. Bird 3: Less embossing (no tabs, no bottom plate, folded paper instead) looked good, then got carried away with Frayed Burlap, now looks like a house sparrow. Bird 4...finally made it to the cage (meanwhile surrounded by kitties, thinking they were eventually going to get lucky with real thing).

The Background was made using the Wrinkless Distress technique from Tim's book, with Antique Linen, Frayed burlap and Walnut Stain. I wrote the maker of the stamp down, and then left it home...ask if you need it! Same with the saying...where is my memory!!! And there you have it! Grungy Blocky Goodness--#7

This week over at Studio L3, Linda has set our mission to discover color-blocking, a la Tim Style, with a Ranger Video made during CHA. Now, while I have known about this technique, for some really stupid reason, I just never made the connection to do it with the applicator sponges and distress inks!!?? How easy, fun and quick is this!! Since my 7 Gypsies tray is starting to look a tad monochomastic, my goal this week was to add some color (even before I knew what we'd be doing.)

So, using Scattered Straw, Victorian Velvet, Milled Lavender and edging with Dusty Concord, I blocked in my background. I don't use the actual applicator...they don't stay stuck for long when you swap out, and I just would get too annoyed with 36 of those buggers lying around on my desk! I instead cut up the cut and dry foam as needed, in what ever size I feel like at the time. My fingers are quite capable of holding the foam smooth and steady in place of an applicator. I use one foam per color group, and right now they all fit in one of the little drawers in my desk caddy. I thought it looked quite fabulous!

So, then, my brain starts going with ideas to finish...and butterflies, (the die I said I'd stop using for a bit) came to mind. First I stamped a butterfly background in Dusty concord. I can not remember who made it, all my notes said is "envelope lady @ Springfield show". I probably should have used milled lavendar, as it became a tad dark. This made the paper choice for the butterfly tricky...finally chose a Bazzil light purple metallic. I wanted some gold, so ended up stippling some gold AI additive---thought the paper would behave more like glossy--ah well. threw in some tiny...really tiny...microscopic...black pearls for a bit of dimension.

Still wanting more gold, I used a Magenta border and corner stamp with gold EP, then stamped the saying (can't remember this either) on purple, and Ta dah! Not to bad, considering I wasn't sure I'd even get to play this week! The butterfly is raised up on thick tape, but this photo isn't showing that well. And as for the main mission--to add color to my tray...lets just say next week I'm aiming for hot pink, shocking orange or bright yellow! LOL!

WOYWW #97

Here they are!!! Just before I turn out the lights Wed. night...aren't they beautiful?? (Oh, no, not the Reese's! They were long gone!) No, the canvas's! I had gotten Tim Holt'z 2nd DVD, "The Journey Continues" at Christmas. His altered canvas with beeswax facinated me! Since then, I have been on a quest to find natural canvas. The credits listed Canvas Concepts. They were still around, but only do wholesale now. And when I got their distribution list, sure, stores carried the white, gesso'ed canvas's, but not the natural ones. (I had even managed to place 2 orders, Mid West Scrapbook Supplies cancelled it almost immediately, and Sears went so far as to give me a tracking number and date of delivery...only once that day came and went, and I called them, they told me the product was no longer available, did I want a credit???) So, after emailing the company rep 5, er, 6; maybe 7 times..she finally hooked me up with an 8 x 8 inch pack! They arrived Tues! Of course Tim's segment lasted about 15 minutes, start to finish....these took about 15 minutes, and still had to dry! LOL! Hopefully I can start the beeswax portion on my next craft break-away; and get the letters and everything else ready and complete by the weekend!! If "pleading" a migraine to call in sick didn't always bring the real thing...I'd be all waxy now-LOL!

A Grungy Monday Resist...

Welcome to the 2nd week of Grungy Monday hosted by Linda at Studio L3. This week, we visit Ranger Ink to delve into Distress Inks with Studio Multi Medium. Our instructions come from Tim himself, which I had to get to work early to download and watch. I took brief notes; it seemed fairly straightforward, and totally cool! Proof that Tim is a great instructor! (I will get to a class of his before I die..I swear!) And then life intervened, and its 5 days later. Hmm, where did I put that post-it with my notes?? Originally I figured I would use cut n-dry foam for my stamp, but then various posts on the "All Things Tim" yahoo group led me to believe it would be too thick, so I ran out to Joann's and found some craft foam.

Now, once cut, how to stamp with it??? Hmmm, I found some really thin ez-cling for unmounted stamps..sounds perfect! Now, which of my very few dies to use?? Ahh, my new butterflies!! (OK, and here, you can hold me to this...I Promise..this will be the last project I do with those butterflies for a mont..few weeksss...ok, at least a week!)

So, being very proud of my cling-mounted, professional looking butterfly stamp..time to get with the rest of the project. I cut some Basic Gray Origins paper to fit the tag, then started the resist; and it is indeed very cool! (You may remember, I'm always looking for easy ways to reverse stamp, as most white inks, quite frankly, suck!) After drying (I remembered!), I inked up my paper with Forest Moss and Walnut Ink DI's. And, wow, those 3 butterflies popped!! I stamped the verse (Penny Black) with Archival ink, then filled in the corners with some tattered flowers also made with the Origins paper. Added some fibers, and lo and behold; you can't really see those beautiful butterflies!

This is one technique I'll be using again and again! Especially since I discovered that the multi medium easily washes off rubber stamps too if caught quickly (yea, don't ask...) So hop over to Linda's, check out Tim's video, and start resisting away!

The Playdate Cafe #72

Ok, in real life, these colors are true..well, the pink is a bit paler on the tag, but richer on the label..in real life thank what the photo looks like to me. I don't know if the camera needs an adjustment, or eye (lol) do! (Sorry, really punchy today--every critter in this house is driving me bonkers!)

But, speaking of punchy...this is not how I envisioned this project..it was supposed to be a flowery card, but first...I just had to play with my new Tim Holtz Butterfly dies!! I quickly glued two pieces of scrap together to cover them, and OMG! How fantastic are those butterflies!!! It wasn't until I went to put them in my little "pieces-parts" drawer for future use that I realized; they were Orange and Blue..so I just had to use them!

I had also ordered Tim's new Labels stamp set...so the Florist one seemed a natural fit...and then earlier this week I used Penny Black's Brushstroke Lily, which was still on my desk, so that became the main image. It is a technique showcased by Tim Holtz on his first DVD, using Adironadack Inks and a water mister. Very cool, particularly on the Brushstroke images! The tag background and the label background are DI Spun Sugar and Victorian Velvet, with Broken China around the edges. The Adirondack Inks are Denim, Bright Orange and Terra Cotta. Not real crazy about the blue stems, but what are ya gonna do? So..Ta da..my Play Date Cafe entry for the week. Inking...Masking....Stamping....#32!

Wow...week #32 in the Compendium of Curiosities Challenge with Linda @ StudioL3! Winding down, but I think the best have been saved for last. I admit, I love using masks, I just never remember to do it...unless my back is against the wall, and I have tried all other ridiculous solutions,which never work, and then, Duh! try a mask! LOL!

In case you haven't noticed, and I have only done 3 items with them, but I have a thing for pears...maybe I see myself in them, I don't know. I don't eat them raw, generally, but do make a mean pear crisp! And I have almost every pear stamp there is! So, it was the first stamp I thought of to give this a go (oh, and the fact that it would be easy to cut out the mask..that was in the brain as well!)

Now, (and I actually have to be quick..posting at work..shh) I probably could have made the background darker so the pear would have stood out more, but I really liked it at this level, and I actually remember all the previous challenges where I mentioned I should have stopped 2 steps earlier! I will, though, at least I think I will...go back and put some rock candy stickles inside the pear...today it seems to need it! The Pear came from Art Impressions (I so love this line; I really need to use them more often; they can be very grungy too!), the Pear Text came from A Stamp in the Hand, the Pear Kanji came from Onyxpressions (spelling?) and the Latin Text came from Anna Griffin. Yeah, that was done with Tea Dye DI...was a bit too red, maybe Pumice would have been better...but it does sorta go with the Aged Mahogany that was rubbed on the edges.

Altering with Paint: Metal, Walls, some carpet....

Greatings everyone!! If you don't follow the "What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday" series from Julia at The Stamping Ground, then you have missed my most exciting news (you could jump to my previous post, though): I have finished (almost) converting my Step-sons old room into my new craft studio! Good bye only one-outlet, ceiling light, no heat drafty space over the garage; hello bright yellow walls, an "as clean as Stanley Steamer could get it-it should be torn up" carpet, and a chance to actually get a place for everything, with everything in, err, yeah, so that part may not happen. I do have to leave a corner for a guest bed, small dresser and tv stand, so I am having spacial issues, and haven't figured out where to move my stamps, much less my photography items and music. But it is great fun! And, this is my first official piece of art that has come from my new room!

So, on to the Challenge; this week, Linda at Studio L3 (oh, I need a studio name!) has given us Altered Metal with Paint, page 48 of The Compenium of Curiosities. I think I'm going to put this in a frame, and start my wall of art pieces. Grungy brown frames, etc., will look great on the bright yellow walls! So, back to this piece. I didn't like all the blues or dark brown paints I had...this is the Lifetime muse token from Tim, and it was already a nice brown, so I went with the Lemonade, which was, eh, so then I added some Lettuce dabber, and finally toned it with some espresso. Still not thrilled with it, as I had already done the umbrella man and saying with a really cool EP I found while moving: Jasper from Judikins. A red-brown-coppery mix. I can't believe I don't have a raisin or current dabber!! Anyway, I need to figure which side is "up" with the embossing fades; I think I did this one backwards, which made it really hard to stick everything down. After trying double tape, a glue stick, and finally CH's matte gesso, it still didn't like sticking to the grunge...which was covered with Ancient page, antique linen and tea dye DI's. Any ideas? So, I better get back to work...so I can afford some of the new releases from Tim...very exciting things out there! Have a very crafty week everyone.

Great Scribbily-Wibbily!!

Merry Christmas Everyone!! Despite my total lack of Holiday spirit all season so far, (which, besides losing our dear kitty Angus, I can only attribute to my manager's cruel and unusual punishment of playing the ONLY radio station that started Christmas Music on November 1! {I mean, yes, I am a musician with a few Christmas concerts scheduled, but AGGHHH!}) I am finally ready and looking forward to heading to my Mother-in Laws for the Holiday. And with wrapping done, I even had time to play along with Linda's Compendium of Curiosities Challenge.

This week we are on page #34, the Scribble Stain Distress. OK, my first tag was a mess!! Waaayyyy too much scribbly, but the next few tags progressed nicely into a really cool technique! So, now to use the tags...and I kept going back to the first one... The scribble is Fired Brick, and I just kept thinking flames..so here it is!

Now, in hindsight, I probably would have used a resist or batik technique for Jim, so that he came through the flames, not lying on top, on vellum--oh well. The stamp set--I swear-- is from The Stampsmith which I got a few years ago at the Springfield Show. It was a cool plate with Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix and Lennon, with appropiate quotes, but I can't find it on their website now to confirm it...but it just has to be!

So Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope everyone, in addition to having a warm, safe holiday, also gets great crafty gifts under their tree!

Doubly Distressing-Not!

Wow! Week 23! That is were we are at Linda's Studio L3 and the Compendium of Curiosities Challenge. And this week, page 40, Double Distress. Now, the horder in me just can't run amok with the grunge stash--you just never know when you might not be able to get more! but I did practice on a few pieces, and they came out just fine-I guess there really is something in reading directions twice! (note to self--make sure you do that with the pumpkin trifle recipe!) So ready to boldly step forth--I fan through my few texture screens and then..there it is....the Peppermint Swirl that came with a giftcard die!! Eureka! (You see--I have a thing for peppermint swirls--oddly enough not to eat them-but my Christmas Tree would be covered in swirls and candy canes--except that my husband has some say in decorating)

Now, from the batik challenge, I learned you have to think color backwards--see, I can learn! And here, as with all my great ideas, things went awry! To get the white I started with the pearl adirondack dabber; can't imagine what could go wrong. Step three with Barn Door DI, still good. Next step, with aged mahogany, also still good. And then the next step---oh boy. Edging with foam smudged the ink and the dabber together, leaving not a nice dark border, but a pink smudge!! (hmm, just like challenge #4) Ah well, The dark was nice, but the effect is quite cool!

So, with my fav mice (Stampendous) colored with Prismacolor pencils (and I am amazed how the white one can even stand out against white paper) we are set to go. Now, if only this could be done a tad quicker, but I still have 23 cards to make--and the clock is ticking! And I'm still typing! Yikes---oh, and to see a humorous challenge that came up while working on this--visit my previous post--WOYWW...I swear--not staged at all! CCC #21! Perfect Distress

Wow, week #21 already?? Over at Studio L3's Compenium Challenge we have been progressing nicely through Tim's book. This week: page 38, the Perfect Distress technique. Now, this was one of those challenges that upon thumbing through the book the first time, a certain stamp jumped out at me. Not to mess with the muse, I pushed all the Christmas stuff aside, and dug it out. And in a pre-senior moment...I just can't remember who made it...Magenta, maybe? Anyway, I love this stamp, even though it is HUGE! (by card-making standards! LOL!)

So, off I go with the mustards and staws and a dab of..hmm, corderoy or photo, no maybe burlap (where is my memory this morning?), the background was done. Not thinking things through, I immediately stamped my image in Ancient Mahogany...and dusted with copper PP's....TOO SOON! I never dried the background..ugh! So, take two, wasn't in such a rush..and..yupper! It looks pretty much like I hoped! Of course I then needed every trick in my photo-background toolbox to get the shiney-ness to appear; lets just say, thank god I've gone digital--easily a whole roll would have been spent trying to get a clear, focused image!

So, I really like this technique. With the right image it could be your main focus, but it can also make a really cool backgound. Thanks again Linda for running these challenges! Have a great crafty week everyone!

Distressing-ly Wrinkle-Free!

Welcome to Week #16 on the Compendium Challenge at Studio L3. This week: page 33, Wrinkle-free Distress. And, OK, I have a confession: I have, er sorta done this one already...I just couldn't help it!! It looked so inviting, easy, promising...

So, yes, you have seen this as a background on a few of my past entries. However, in the spirit of discovery, and the challenge, I have taken one of my first tags that I tried this with, and used it as my entry. (because, yes, practice really does make this better, smoother, more controlled)

My colors were Peeled Paint,Barn Door, Wild Honey, and Mustard. All the stamps came from Rubbernecker Stamps: I just love the poem by Robert Frost! And even though it is like-high 70's and humid as hell today (yeah, upstate NY...What the..?) this tag is almost like looking at all the leaves that have fallen in the driveway.
